Lake Mavrovo
Lake Mavrovo is located in the Mavrovo region, less than 100 km from Skopje. The lake is surrounded by the Šar Mountains on the North and the Bistra Mountains on the South, both exceeding heights of 2000m. After being a part of the Mavrovo National Park since, this lake is considered to be one of the most extensive artificial lakes in the country.
Lake Mavrovo calmly rests in the famous national park with its beauty. High deciduous and coniferous trees rise above the lake on all sides, which are mirrored in the lake's crystal-clear water. They endow it with a unique beauty and look. There are numerous locations from where one can enjoy a breathtaking view of Mavrovo Lake. for instance, from the road heading to Galichnik or the ski slopes.
Moreover, one of the most impressive things that will leave you breathless is the submerged church in the lake itself. This church is the "St. Nikola" church was built in 1850 in Mavrovo, and was in excellent condition for 103 years. Then it was decided that the site needed an artificial lake. At the time when the lake was created, many parts of the old villages that were there were sunk. That's why, nowadays, only a small part of the roof and the bell tower are seen from the lake.
Lake Mavrovo is an important tourist destination, being frequented for recreational activities such as swimming, boating and trout fishing during the summer.
