National Air and Space Museum

The Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum, usually known as the Air and Space Museum, is a museum in Washington, D.C., United States. It began as the National Air Museum in 1946 and moved to its current location on the National Mall near L'Enfant Plaza in 1976. The museum saw roughly 6.2 million visitors in 2018, making it the world's fifth most visited museum and the United States' second most visited museum. Museum attendance fell to 267,000 in 2020 owing to protracted closures and a reduction in international tourists triggered by the COVID-19 epidemic.

The National Air and Space Museum is a research center for aviation and spaceflight history and science, as well as planetary science and terrestrial geology and geophysics. Almost all of the space and aircraft on the show are originals or backups. It has a Dulles International Airport extension, the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, which opened in 2003 and covers 760,000 square feet (71,000 m2). As of 2014, the museum's collection was restored at the Paul E. Garber Preservation, Restoration, and Storage Facility in Suitland, Maryland, while restoration and archive activities were moved to the Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar at the Udvar-Hazy annex.
