National Museum of Natural History
The Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History is a natural history museum located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., United States. It is open 364 days a year and is free to enter. With 7.1 million visitors in 2016, it was the world's eighth most visited museum and the most frequented natural history museum. The museum on the National Mall, which opened in 1910, was one of the first Smithsonian buildings built solely to house national collections and research facilities. The main structure is 1.5 million square feet (140,000 m2) in size, with 325,000 square feet (30,200 m2) of display and public space, and over 1,000 staff.
The museum has the world's biggest natural history collection, with over 145 million specimens of plants, animals, fossils, minerals, rocks, meteorites, human remains, and human cultural items. It also houses over 185 professional natural history scientists, making it the world's biggest collection of scientists committed to natural and cultural history research.
