Padmaavat
Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed the 2018 Indian period drama love film Padmaavat. Based on Malik Muhammad Jayasi's epic poem of the same name, it stars Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmavati, a Rajput queen noted for her beauty and the bride of Maharawal Ratan Singh, played by Shahid Kapoor. When Sultan Alauddin Khilji, played by Ranveer Singh, learns of her beauty, he invades her realm in order to enslave her. In supporting roles, Aditi Rao Hydari, Jim Sarbh, Raza Murad, and Anupriya Goenka appeared.
Padmaavat is one of the most expensive Indian movies ever filmed, with a production budget of $28 million. Padmaavat, which was supposed to be released on December 1, 2017, was marred by several controversies. Its publication was postponed indefinitely due to violent protests. Padmaavat was rescheduled for January 25, 2018 release in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D formats, making it the first Indian film to be released in IMAX 3D.
The aesthetics, cinematography, and Singh's portrayal of the villainous Khilji were praised by critics, but the storyline, execution, length, and adherence to regressive patriarchal mores were panned. Despite not being distributed in several Indian states, it grossed more than $77 million at the box office, making it a commercial triumph and the 10th highest-grossing Indian film of all time. Padmaavat got a record of 18 nominations and four awards at the 64th Filmfare Awards, including Best Actor (Critics) for Singh. It also earned Bhansali three National Film Awards, including Best Music Direction.
