Pizza Pilgrims
After gaining a dedicated following for its three-wheeled food truck (often found in Berwick Street Market), Pizza Pilgrims launched at this popular location in summer 2013 after gaining athe dedicated following for its three-wheeled food truck (often found in Berwick Street Market). Through the ground-floor windows, you can see the kitchen and pizza oven (which also serves the takeout sector). The main basement dining space is small and cozy, with little chairs and tables. Wipe-clean green checkered tablecloths and 1960s Italian cinema posters contribute to the nostalgic Soho trattoria vibe. A nook for table football contributes to the welcoming, slightly stylish atmosphere.
Ten pizzas are listed on the menu, printed on Polpo-style manila paper. The attractive, thick bases are piled with on-trend toppings and are chewy and soft in the Neapolitan manner. The spicy Calabrian sausage, "nduja," goes nicely with a basic marinara sauce. Other tempting combinations include salsiccia e friarielli (fennel sausage and a sort of brassica leaf) and calzone with prosciutto cotto, ricotta, mushrooms, and fior di latte. Desserts include Gelupo ice creams and sorbets, either plain or decorated, such as vanilla with extra virgin olive oil and sea salt. The carafe offers wine, which adds to the 1960s vibe; other options include prosecco and fashionable Venetian cocktails like negroni or spritz. All ten London Pizza Pilgrims sites are offering collection, with delivery available from Shoreditch, Covent Garden, Soho, and West India Quay. Its DIY meal kit, “pizza in the post”, is available nationwide.
