Prepare yourself: Four Hundred Rabbits is a pizza and beer establishment. Not pizza sliders served in miniature pizza boxes or beer cocktails with humorous names: just pizza and beer done really well. Because the former is sourdough, it is chewy rather than brittle. Chorizo and pickled chilies, for example, or courgette, feta, and pine nuts, are both classic and imaginative toppings.
Then there's the beer, which comes in a varied and intriguing range: a zippy 6.5 percent saison from Burning Sky, as well as Huddersfield's Magic Rock and Danish brewer To L. That's really all there is to it. The sides aren't really worth the effort, but the Gelupo ice cream excellent. The service is quick and courteous, and the pink-and-green color palette stands out from London's usual bare brickwork and lightbulbs aesthetic.

Are you ready to tick some hipster boxes? Yes? Let's get started. Joe Public is an artisanal fast-food business (tick), in a stools-only area (tick), in a former public restroom (tickety-tick-tock)! One counter inside, one on the 'wall side' and one at the bar (sit here for extra legroom) could go on: drinks menus written on the Victorian white-tiled walls; cutlery stored in cleaned-up jars of chopped tomatoes; Joe Public IPA, its' own brand.' You get the idea.
It's a pizza establishment in the United States, and what comes out of the ovens is a 20-inch pie. Twenty inches, by the way, is enormous. It is bigger than a grown-up's arm. up's That is why you order them by the single slice: two to three are sufficient. American-style toppings include chili-flecked slivers of pepperoni, fatty fennel-spiced sausage with mushroom and caramelized leeks, and a traditional Margherita (a touch over-enthusiastic on the oregano, but generously cheesy). Because this is a US-style establishment, the bases are crunchy, thin, and crispy, so if you're looking for the special Neapolitan-style crusty-plus-chewy dough, you'll have to look elsewhere.
Joe Public will be a big success with the takeout set (there are 30 chairs outside, as well as a hatch open until midnight where you can order 'to go,' and they even blast electro-swing via speakers so you can sway while you wait). But, at only £4 or £4.50 a slice, it's an excellent steal for a sit-down lunch - albeit a brief one, suited for a quick pit-stop.

Pi Pizza Battersea is the first London location of a pizza company founded in Winchester. Inside, there's a lot of green: thick greenery drapes from the ceiling, and there's a real tree in the main space, giving it a piazza-like vibe. Waiters are also friendly. The pizzas are the stars of the show. You're urged to order a "half and half," selecting from a variety of high-quality artisanal toppings at no extra charge. One such pizza was delicious, with wild boar salami and piquillo peppers—the two components brought together by a thwack of chili. A creamy white foundation with artichokes and lardo was also served; the cured pork fat was beautifully tempered with rosemary and pink peppercorns. A simple margherita contained splodges of mozzarella and a delightfully airy dough (fermented for up to 72 hours using a secret method).
Aside from the pizzas, Pi Pizza may be stingy with the details. A burrata appetizer showed no signs of the 'caramelised' black fig being cooked in any manner (though the other starter, a pancetta arancini, was deliciously crisp and salty). The dessert gelato was subpar, and the meringue tart was flavorless. Pi Pizza, on the other hand, is the business when it comes to pizza. Are you interested in vegan cheese? Enter Purezza (Italian meaning 'purity') in Camden. Its plant-based pizzas are delicious, with toppings ranging from smoked tofu to beetroot carpaccio. It's a contemporary, casual room with a distinct bustle; the absence of meat and dairy doesn't appear to have discouraged customers. And it's no surprise. For example, the bread balls were delectable tiny spheres dripping with Purezza's convincing alternative—and then there was the amazing mac 'n' cheese, which generated the same mix of delight, guilt, and perspiration as the genuine kind.
By contrast, the Neapolitan-styled pizzas were relative "light," thanks to fluffy, bubbly, chewy sourdough bases (or a hemp version with a nutty earthiness). Toppings showcased creative vegetable combinations, with a few cheese-style and meatier leanings, but things never got too stodgy. Take the Parmigiana Party, topped with rich aubergine pieces and lightly smoked mozzarella (made from fermented brown rice milk), a sprinkling of nutritional yeast adds a moreish, salty hit. The only negative was the tofu sausage, or rather the lack of it.
Sometimes, though, you just have to say: "To hell with it, I’m getting the Oreo Pizza." What appeared to have four on top, plus something approaching Nutella and something else approaching mascarpone, but really, it all just blended into one sweet, gooey mess. 'Purity’, it seems, doesn’t have to exclude good old-fashioned gluttony. Restaurant-quality pizzas are delivered to your door – all they need is a few minutes in the oven at home and they're good to go. Sourdough pizza giant Franco Manca now has 18 restaurants across London, but one bit of the city has not yet coloured in on the chain’s floury The risk board is the south-east. Perhaps looking to beat them to the punch, Theo’s is a similar set-up, dishing up Neapolitan-style sourdough pizzas and very little else. Another south-easter, 400 rabbits, has already hopped into Crystal Palace, but Theo’s has made itself the crown pie-prince of Camberwell. Unmissable as you walk through the door is the dome-shaped, wood-fired brick oven, which ensures that the pies are done just right. Crusts are soft and chewy on top and crisp underneath, with welcome hits of bitterness from the odd charred spot. Toppings include aubergine, anchovies, and various kinds of pork – and come piled high.
A little too high in some cases. A veg-heavy special of chestnut mushroom, blue cheese and leek soon turned soggy in the middle as the over-abundant greenery perspired into the base. It’s better to focus on the more straightforward stuff. The wonderfully cheesy garlic pizza bread (misleadingly labelled as ‘focaccia’ on the menu) showed that Theo’s is capable of doing great things with simple ingredients, and suggests that the £5 lunchtime panuozzo (essentially a pizza sandwich) is also worth checking out. Pies range in price from £6.50 for the margherita to £10 for meatier options. More-than-serviceable house wines come by the 500ml or litre jug. If you do, be sure to sit in and make it a leisurely lunch. With its bare, whitewashed walls and marble-topped tables, eating at Theo’s is a bit like chowing down in an art gallery but minus the stuffy discomfort. The atmosphere is very welcoming, and everything’s keenly priced – not Manca-level cheap, but still, no dish comes in over a tenner. And staff are as cheery as you like.

Zia Lucia has become your favorite non-family member. The name is Italian for "Aunt Lucy," and the pleasant-looking lady beaming out at you from the logo was the idea for this delightful neighborhood pizza, which was launched in June 2016 by Highbury residents Gianluca and Claudio. While it's branding, flavors, and setting are all on point, the establishment nevertheless exudes the kind of old-world charm that can only be found at an Italian family feast.
The menu's USP is the variety of doughs available: there's a wonderfully nutty wholemeal choice; an impressive-looking vegetable charcoal crust that's meant to improve digestion; and a gluten-free crust that's been garnering fantastic reviews from people who eschew nature's elastic. It makes no difference what you purchase because every single ingredient is of the highest quality. Even the flour is the priciest on the market.
