Signal (2016)

Signal is a South Korean fantasy police procedural television series that premiered in 2016 and stars Lee Je-hoon, Kim Hye-soo, and Cho Jin-woong. The series ran on tvN from January 22 to March 12, 2016, on Fridays and Saturdays at 20:30 KST, based on the idea of the 2000 film Frequency and inspired by real-life criminal situations in Korea, particularly the Hwaseong serial killings.

The past and present meet in this criminal thriller series thanks to a strange walkie-talkie. By a strange coincidence, Lee Jae Han (Cho Jin Woong), a detective in 1989, was able to contact cold case profiler Park Hae Young (Lee Je Hoon) in 2015. Through the power of hindsight and foresight, this unexpected relationship led to a crime-solving frenzy. The supernatural advantage, however, comes with restrictions, since the walkie-talkie only lights up irregularly at 11:23 p.m., and only for a minute. As the tempo quickens, the overlapping scenes from the past and present are flawlessly linked together, producing a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. What triggers more interest in this series is that a lot of the cases in this series are based on real crimes like the Hwaseong serial murders and the Seongsu Bridge collapse.
