The Andy Griffith Show

The Andy Griffith Show was an eight-season American situation comedy television series that ran on CBS from October 3, 1960, to April 1, 1968, with a total of 249 half-hour episodes, 159 in black and white and 90 in color, spanning eight seasons. The series never placed lower than seventh in the Nielsen ratings, ending its final season at number one. It has been recognized as the ninth and thirteenth best series in American television history by TV Guide on two separate occasions.

Part of the inspiration for the show came from an episode of The Danny Thomas Show. Andy Griffith plays Andy Taylor, the widower sheriff of Mayberry, North Carolina, a fictitious town of 2,000–5,000 inhabitants, in the sitcom. Andy's cousin, the well-meaning and passionate deputy, Barney Fife (Don Knotts); Andy's aunt and housekeeper, Bee Taylor (Frances Bavier); and Andy's small son, Opie, are among the other key characters (Ron Howard).
