The Beguiled
The Beguiled is a 2017 American Southern Gothic thriller film that Sofia Coppola wrote and directed. This American Civil War-era movie, which cost less than $10 million to produce, is based on Thomas P. Cullinan's book of the same name from 1966. It tells the story of a wounded Union soldier who is treated in a Mississippi seminary. This was a departure for Coppola as the movie featured aspects of the thriller subgenre. Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, Colin Farrell, and Colin are all featured. Following Don Siegel's 1971 film of the same name, it is the second time Cullinan's novel has been adapted for the big screen.
It had its world premiere on May 24 at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival and was chosen to compete for the Palme d'Or in its main competition section. Coppola was the only woman to win the Best Director prize (the first being Yuliya Solntseva in 1961). Focus Features premiered the movie in theaters on June 23, 2017.
