The Dark Knight (2008)
The Dark Knight, a superhero film directed, co-produced, and co-written by Christopher Nolan, was released in 2008. The film is based on the DC Comics character Batman and is the second installment of Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy. It is a sequel to 2005's Batman Begins. The Joker (Ledger), an anarchistic mastermind who tries to undermine Batman's power and throw the city into chaos, confronts Bruce Wayne / Batman (Bale), Police Lieutenant James Gordon (Oldman), and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Eckhart).
The film received critical acclaim and was considered one of the best films of its decade and one of the greatest and most influential films of all time. During its theatrical run, the film also set a number of records. With the exception of WALL-E, The Dark Knight featured on 287 reviewers' top-ten lists in 2008, more than any other film, and more critics (77) ranked The Dark Knight the greatest film released that year.
