The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

The Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 American drama film written and directed by Frank Darabont, based on the Stephen King book Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, published in 1982. The story follows a former successful banker who becomes a prisoner in the bleak Shawshank jailhouse after being judged guilty of a crime he did not commit. The film depicts the man's unusual approach to dealing with his new, difficult existence, and he befriends a number of fellow prisoners along the way, including a wise long-term inmate named Red.

The Shawshank Redemption earned positive reviews upon its initial release, notably for its plot and Robbins and Freeman's performances. It went on to win several award nominations, including seven Academy Award nods, as well as a theatrical re-release that brought the film's box-office total to $73.3 million when combined with overseas receipts.
