The Simpsons
The Simpsons is an animated comedy developed by Matt Groening for Fox Broadcasting Company in the United States. The Simpson family, which comprises Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie, is a satirical representation of American society in the series. The comedy is set in the imaginary town of Springfield and mocks American culture, society, television, and human nature.
Groening came up with the idea for the family just before a call for a series of animated shorts with producer James L. Brooks. He created a dysfunctional family and named the characters after members of his own family, with the exception of Bart, who he felt was a humorous name since it sounded close to "simpleton." On April 19, 1987, the shorts debuted on The Tracey Ullman Show. The sketch was turned into a half-hour prime time show after three seasons, and it became Fox's first series to reach the Top 30 ratings in a season (1989–1990).
