The Smurfs

The Smurfs is a 2011 American 3D live-action/computer-animated comedy film largely based on the Belgian comics creator Peyo's series of the same name. It is the first live-action/animated Smurfs feature film by Sony Pictures Animation. The film follows the Smurfs they get lost in New York City and attempt to return home before it is too late.

Filming began in New York City in March 2010. With three different release dates, Columbia Pictures finally released The Smurfs on July 29, 2011, in the United States. Despite the negative reviews after its premiere, the film was a box office triumph, collecting $564 million worldwide on a budget of $110 million, making it the ninth highest-grossing picture of 2011 and Sony Pictures Animation's most commercially successful film to date. On July 31, 2013, a sequel, The Smurfs 2, was published.
