The Sustainable Development Goals – A global, transdisciplinary vision for the future

The United Nations launched the 17 Sustainable Development Goals in 2015. (SDGs). The goals, which have been adopted by 193 member nations, are a major international step toward putting humanity on a path to sustainable development. This course will provide you with a historical overview of how sustainability has been perceived, as well as a thorough introduction to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – what they are, how progress can be measured, and how the SDGs are relevant to the management of the global systems that support humanity. The course will look at how different social actors are responding to and executing the Sustainable Development Goals.

While all of the SDGs are important for long-term development, SDG 13 on Climate Action is generally seen as the most pressing in terms of global implementation. As a result, this SDG receives special attention. You will obtain up-to-date knowledge on the current understanding of human influences on the Earth at the planetary level by taking this course. Within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), progress toward establishing global control of human interactions with the climate system is also considered.

Professor Katherine Richardson, a member of the 15-person group designated by the UN General Secretary in 2016 to prepare the 2019 Global Sustainable Development Report, created and taught the course. Katherine interviews professionals who provide insight into the issue at hand in each lecture.
