The Two Popes is a 2019 biographical drama film directed by Fernando Meirelles and written by Anthony McCarten, adapted from McCarten's play The Pope which premiered at Royal & Derngate Theatre in 2019.
'The Two Popes,' by Fernando Meirelles, details the circumstances that led to the election of a new leader of the Catholic Church while the previous is still living. The film dives deeply into the relationship between Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, or eventual Pope Francis (Jonathan Pryce), and Pope Benedict XVI, with a main focus on the aftermath of the Vatican leaks controversy (Anthony Hopkins). Their conversation goes from God to their own childhoods and favorite television shows. Both Pryce and Hopkins received a lot of accolades from reviewers for their performances, and they were nominated for a lot of prizes, including Oscars, Golden Globes, and BAFTAs.
