Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos

The National University of San Marcos (Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, UNMSM) is a public research university in Lima, Peru. It is the first officially established (privilege granted by Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor) and the oldest continuously operating university in the Americas. It is also known as the University of Peru and the "Dean University of the Americas." It was known as the "Royal and Pontifical University of the City of the Kings of Lima" until the Viceroyalty period, and it is now known as Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos or La Decana de América.

Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos is one of only a few Peruvian universities to have ranked first nationally in several editions of various international university rankings. Lima is home to its main campus, University City. It was chartered on May 12, 1551, by a royal decree signed by Charles I of Spain, making it the Americas' oldest officially established university. San Marcos University has 66 academic-professional schools organized into 20 faculties and six academic areas. Undergraduate and graduate degrees are available from all faculties. Over 30,000 undergraduate and 4,000 graduate students from across the country, as well as some international students, make up the student body. The university's administration oversees a number of public institutions, including the San Marcos Cultural Center and the Lima Museum of Natural History.

Peruvian Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa and twenty-one Peruvian presidents are among the notable alumni. San Marcos is also known for the high quality of its curricula, a competitive admissions process, and its status as a scientific research center. Several influential Peruvian and Latin American thinkers, researchers, scientists, politicians, and writers have studied there, highlighting San Marcos' leading role as an educational institution in Peruvian and global history.
