Yerevan State Medical University
The Mkhitar Heratsi Yerevan State Medical University (Yerevan State Medical University, YSMU) is an Armenian medical university located in the Armenian capital of Yerevan. It was founded in 1924 by Mkhitar Heratsi, a physician and educator. At a ceremony in Alexandropol on January 31, 1920, the People's University of Armenia was officially established in the presence of Prime Minister Alexander Khatisian and Minister of Culture and Public Education Nikol Aghbalian, in the first year of the First Republic of Armenia. Earlier that year, in October, the then-Minister of Education, Gevorg Ghazarian, made the decision to create a faculty of medicine within the university. But the idea was never carried out due to political factors beyond our control. Armenia gained independence as a republic in December 1920.
The Armenian government established the Medical Faculty of Yerevan in 1920, marking the beginning of the country's medical education. Mkhitar Heratsi, an Armenian physician who lived in the 12th century, was honored with a name change on May 25, 1989, at Yerevan State Medical University.
