Dawn Sittings occur every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00 to 6:50 AM. Wednesday evenings feature two sittings from 6:30 to 7:40 PM, followed by a practice discussion. On Saturday mornings, there are three sittings and a talk from 9:00 AM to noon. These sessions offer a disciplined yet nurturing approach to Zen practice.
The center is led by experienced practitioners. Kate Watson-Forbess, a Dharma Holder, has been practicing Zen meditation since 1994 and was named a Practice Leader in July 2019. Chuck Sweet has been practicing Zen since 1972 and joined the San Diego Sangha in 2006. He works with teachers of the White Plum lineage to maintain the spirit of the Zen Center.
Zen Center of San Diego also emphasizes the importance of attending silent retreats. These retreats create an environment that minimizes external distractions, allowing deeper inward reflection. Activities include sitting and walking meditation, mindful movement practice, vegetarian meals, work periods, meetings with teachers, and Dharma talks.
In addition, the center offers 3- and 4-day retreats, with accommodations for out-of-town participants. These retreats are open to those with some meditation experience and are designed to be accessible to many, with low costs and scholarships available.
