  1. If you despise heavy helmets, then the Giro Register MIPS might be your best option. It was one of the lightest helmets we had tried, and we found it to be quite comfortable. Indeed, its comfort was so immense that, even though we had to remove our helmets upon arriving at our destination, most of us forgot that these helmets were on our heads in the first place!

Along with its compactness, the Register helmet features an additional strip of cushioning on the brows - along with inside cushioning stripes that reach farther toward the back of your head than other helmets, contributing to its superior feel. In fact, the Scott Vivo Plus and the Bell Super- Air R were the only versions we discovered that rivaled the Giro Register when it comes to comfort.

Last but not least, this GIRO Register MIPS helmet has a snap-on visor and the RocLoc Sport Fit mechanism - along with a back-of-the-head dialing structure similar to the BOA Fit system used by Bontrager and others. All these extra gadgets ensure the helmet's utmost safety.

  2. The Bell Super Air R was the comfiest helmet we tested, and it also provided the most comprehensive protection – particularly for mountain cyclists. Among the finest bike helmets we examined, it was the only one with a chin guard to shield you in the event of an off-road head crash, and it fit more snugly (but still comfortably) than any others.

The Bell Super Air R, like previous Bell models, has dial-in Float fitting mechanisms. However, it also features more cushioning on the inside and a padding layer that extends farther back for a more secure fit. If you feel like the chin shield is too forceful and rather unnecessary on downtown streets, then do not worry, as it can easily be extracted. The helm also has three levels for visibility, so you can move it back if you are climbing a hill and don't want it to hinder your vision.

All in all, if you are a committed bike rider, the Bell Super Air R could be the finest purchase you can make.

  3. POC Axion SPIN is a typical illustration of off-road or endurance helmets that is extremely ideal for people who travel downtown streets to get to their workplace. It is no doubt one of the best bike helmets for riders looking for a single model that can be used in a range of settings.

While not totally enclosed like urban versions, this POC Axion SPIN helmet shields your head's back much more thoroughly than traditional lightweight road helmets that are supposed to accommodate velocity and hot weather. Even better, the Axion forgoes the MIPS impact mechanism in favor of POC's SPIN System. To be more specific, the Axion SPIN utilizes a network of rubber pads to deflect rotating stresses. It seems to perform better in testing than typical foam-only versions.

All in all, we really appreciate the aesthetic of the Axion helmet, albeit it did not give the same level of comfort as others; we had hoped it came with more padding to decrease back friction.

  4. If there is one design that appears to adapt to a range of purposes with little difficulty, we believe it will be none other than this Bell Trace MIPS gear. This item has been viewed by many bikers as one of the best bike helmets currently available. And there is a good reason for such reviews: after all, the Bell Trace MIPS helmet is quite comfortable in both hot and cold weather, comes with a clip-on brim, and is reasonably priced.

During our testing, we found the size to be very appropriate; also, the dial-and-cable fitment buttons are simple to use - much more so than other devices with twice the price. So while Bell Trace MIPS helmets are the most fashionable headgear on the market, the price may be one of their advantages.

Also, due to Bell Trace's less radical and conservative style compared to many other models, it is an excellent alternative if you are trying to appease a range of preferences - such as when you want to equip your whole family with headgears.

  5. Bontrager, a Wisconsin-based startup (which is now owned by bike manufacturer Trek) promotes its proprietary WaveCel technology via this contemporary Bontrager Specter WaveCel Helmet.

Our independent testing has shown that the design - which collapses on impact - protects the head better than typical foam helmets, especially against head wounds caused by specific bicycle accidents. As with MIPS, the goal is to provide enhanced protection in angled strikes by absorbing rotational energy.

We discovered the Bontrager Specter WaveCel Helmet to be super comfy, although it is noticeably smaller than some of the other best bicycle helmets on our list, granting it a less thick and heavy appearance. However, people with bigger heads should still give it a look; after all, the helmet has the BOA fit system, which utilizes an inside cage of cables for adjustability, and it works nicely. Even better, the Specter's chin strap has a magnetic snap, which makes clasping simpler. While some people like this magnetic latch, you can open and shut any of the standard clicks with one hand as well.

  6. The Smith Express is intended for metropolitan commuters who prefer city streets to rural highways. Rather than being heavily vented, the Express has an enclosed design, which is also characteristic of skateboard designs. As a result, it is a hotter helmet than other similar helmets, and hence, is more suited to autumn rides than sweltering summer rides.

The Smith Express is in no way smaller in size compared to other helmets. However, its more confined form makes this helmet look less massive and bulbous than traditional vented versions. Unfortunately, we did not think that the Smith Express is as pleasant as other finest bike helmets on our list - mostly because the cushioning is insufficient to protect the back of your head from colliding with the liner's hard foam.

This issue may be remedied by adding padding to the upper rear of the helmets, but Smith does not do so for unknown reasons. We did adjust to the fit after hours of riding; still, if you do not think you can get used to such designs, this item might not be for you.

  7. Lazer has been manufacturing bicycle helmets for almost a century (beginning with leather hats), so you can be confident that the Belgian firm has plenty of expertise in making cycling gear. The Lazer Blade+MIPS helmet from this brand is an airy and well-ventilated type that we found to be quite comfortable and simple to adjust. It has a one-of-a-kind thumb screw (dubbed Rollsys) on the peak of the helmets for tightening or loosening the internal frame.

Both the front and rear of the Lazer Blade+MIPS were fairly tight, however (it feels like someone was grabbing your head). But do not worry; if you have any difficulties, Lazer is among the few firms on the market that include an additional strip of cushioning inside. Even better, an aeroshell ($19.99) is available for a much more aero form - and to help ward off the weather (or storm, if you are feeling brave).

One recommendation: We recommend ordering a size bigger than the normal size you are used to when it comes to most Lazer models.

  8. The POC Ventral Lite is the nicest cycling helmet we have ever tried. It is also the most open (and hence, the lightest!). So if you often find yourself sweating excessively under most helmets, that might be the answer for you.

However, the POC Ventral achieves its featherweight status by using a regular expanded styrene (EPS) foam lining rather than a MIPS construction or POC's proprietary SPIN system. As a result, you are sacrificing some advanced crash safety to retain some weight savings.

In addition, we also discovered that the POC Ventral Lite was not as comfy as other models; to be more specific, even after tightening the helmet using POC's dial-to-tighten mechanism, we could still sense the roughness from the firm PC shell in certain areas. If you still love to purchase this model, then we believe that a couple more padding (which POC often offers with their ski helmets) would solve this problem in a blink.

  9. The Scott Vivo Plus was, no doubt, among the comfiest vented street rider helmets we have ever tested. It is true that most of us are more familiar with the Scott's snowboard and ski helmets. But we cannot deny that we were as impressed with its MIPS bike helmet nonetheless.

Among the top cycling helmets on our list, you can say that the Scott Vivo Plus is much heavier than the Giro Register, for example, and lacks longitudinal vents for improved aerodynamics. As a result, during long trips in the sun, it generated more warmth than we desired.

But in compensation, we discovered that this Scott Vivo Plus helmet was incredibly comfortable; and unlike some other versions we examined, it did not tend to slip forward. Though the helmet had a somewhat broader profile than others, this had no effect on its size compatibility. Even better, the helmet comes with a removable visor - with two adjustment options - and a soft tote bag.

  10. The Specialized S-Works Prevail II helmet was the most technologically advanced helmet we evaluated, with an accident alarm program. It begins with a layer of carbon and aramid fibers that adds stiffness and weight, as well as the MIPS impact deflecting system. The manufacturer then incorporated its ANGi system (an acronym for Angle and G-force indicator), which consists of a sensor affixed to the helmet's rear. If the system senses a significant fall, it will initiate a countdown to an alert program through the Specialized Ride application on a linked smartphone.

If you are not wounded anywhere (well, except your pride), you may simply dismiss the alert. Otherwise, the program will send a text message with your location to some of your emergency contacts. This feature of the Specialized S-Works Prevail II helmet may actually save your life if you are a solitary rider who often travels on rural roads. So do not underestimate it!
