He is a practicing physician and a member of the Lupus Foundation's DC/MD/VA chapter's Medical-Scientific Advisory Council.

Systemic lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune illness that can affect any body system or organ. An hyperactive immune system detects that different sections of the body do not belong and attacks them in the 1.4 million people in the United States who have lupus. Lupus is an extremely complex disease that must be appropriately managed for the patient's maximum health and well-being.

The Lupus Encyclopedia is an authoritative compendium that offers thorough descriptions of every body system that may be affected by the disease, as well as practical coping suggestions. Lupus patients, their loved ones, carers, and medical professionals will all find this a great resource. The Lupus Encyclopedia, illustrated with images, figures, and tables, covers symptoms, diagnostic methods, treatments and their potential adverse effects, and when to seek medical attention. Dr. Donald Thomas advises readers on a variety of themes, including functioning with a disability, complementary and alternative medicine, infections, cancer, and a variety of other topics.

  5. Dr. Afrin received a B.S. in computer science from Clemson University in 1984 and an M.D. from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in 1988, where he also completed an internal medicine residency and clinical and research fellowships in hematology/oncology. He was involved in undergraduate and graduate medical education, educational and information technology administration, hematology/oncology practice and research, and medical informatics.

In 2008, Dr. Afrin began to realize that a newly recognized type of mast cell disease, now known as mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), was the underlying diagnosis in many of the patients he was seeing, who were all suffering from a wide range of chronic multisystem inflammatory illnesses with unknown causes. Dr. Afrin quickly learned that MCAS is substantially more common than the sole mast cell disease previously known to medicine (the uncommon disease of mastocytosis), and that most MCAS patients, once correctly diagnosed, can eventually discover significantly helpful disease-specific drugs.

The frequency and magnitude of the improvements Dr. Afrin has seen — even the relief that comes from finally having a unifying diagnosis other than "psychosomatism" — have driven him to concentrate his efforts in this area, not only tending to the needs of his patients but also pursuing research to advance the understanding of the disease and helping to educate other professionals who, in turn, can help even more of the many people who have long suffered not only the symptoms of the disease but also the disease itself. As it turns out, such people are not so unfortunate and have only one fundamental issue (and a very frequent one at that) that has the biological capability of developing, directly or indirectly, into most or all of their previously diagnosed disorders.

There is still much to learn about this, but even with our current very limited understanding, the opportunity to diagnose and help MCAS patients appears enormous, and Dr. Afrin felt that a description of the disease written for the general public might help lead some MCAS patients on a journey to diagnosis and improvement sooner rather than later. Dr. Afrin thinks that Never Bet Against Occam will assist persons who may or may not have MCAS. A percentage of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be used to fund research and teaching in this field.

  7. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), established in 1954, is a professional membership organisation with over 50,000 national, regional, and worldwide members from over 90 countries dedicated to improving health through science, education, and medicine. Members of the ACSM operate in a wide variety of medical specializations, allied health professions, and scientific areas. Members are dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of sports-related injuries, as well as the promotion of exercise science.

The fourth edition of the American College of Sports Medicine's Exercise Management for Persons With Chronic Diseases and Disabilities uncovers common ground between medical and exercise practitioners, resulting in a more collaborative approach to patient care. This text, created by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and a specialized team of professionals, gives a framework for optimizing patients' and customers' functionality by keeping them physically engaged. This edition is streamlined and revised to better fit chronic populations, including new content on common comorbid diseases.

This fourth edition of ACSM's Exercise Management for Persons With Chronic Diseases and Disabilities explains why exercise is important in disease treatment and prevention, advises medical and exercise professionals on proper exercise prescription protocols, and provides evidence-based guidance on developing individualized exercise programs.

The following are major developments and features of the fourth edition:

    • Current data on exercise management for people with multiple diseases, including recommendations on how to engage with these common but difficult populations
    • A new goal of employing physical activity to improve patients' and clients' functionality and involvement in daily activities rather than just treating and preventing disease.
    • Content designed to assist physicians in prescribing physical activity and exercise to patients in order to promote health, well-being, and longevity.
    • Reorganization of case studies into a single streamlined chapter, with commentary from the senior editor, to encourage critical thinking and understand each patient's unique needs.

The text's case studies are real-life scenarios that assist professionals and doctors in combining scientific knowledge with experience to identify appropriate answers for each individual. The senior editor's commentary on the case studies demonstrates when improvisation is suitable and when more research is required. Tables are emphasized throughout the text to assist readers in rapidly locating critical clinical information. Guidelines based on evidence, recommended websites, and extra readings stimulate the practical application of material and identify more learning opportunities. An additional PowerPoint presentation package assists instructors with classroom discussion.

The unifying objective of including physical activity and exercise in both illness treatment and prevention defines the fourth edition of ACSM's Exercise Management for Persons With Chronic Diseases and Disabilities. Its emphasis on aiding people with various illnesses, which is prevalent in health care today, extends beyond primary and secondary prevention to consider how patients and clients can remain physically active and functionally healthy.

  8. Paul Farmer is a cofounder of Partners In Health and the Chair of Harvard Medical School's Department of Global Health and Social Medicine. Reimagining Global Health is his most recent book. To Repair the World, Pathologies of Power: Health, Human Rights, and the New War on the Poor, and AIDS and Accusation: Haiti and the Geography of Blame are all available from UC Press.

Paul Farmer has battled AIDS in rural Haiti and drug-resistant TB in Peruvian slums. Farmer, a physician-anthropologist with over fifteen years of experience in the field, writes from the front lines of the struggle against these new diseases, demonstrating why, even more than those of history, they target the poor. This "unusually modern inequity" that pervades AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and typhoid in the modern world, and that feeds new (or re-emerging) infectious illnesses like Ebola and cholera, is laid bare in Farmer's devastating memoir filled with disease and human suffering stories.

In Infections and Inequalities, one of the best books on diseases, Farmer argues that most existing explanatory tactics, from "cost-effective therapy" to patient "noncompliance," eventually lead to blaming the victims, using field work and fresh scholarship to challenge accepted methodologies of epidemiology and international health. In actuality, greater forces, both global and local, influence why some people are sick and others are not. Nonetheless, this stirring autobiography is far from a list of unsolvable issues. Farmer writes on what physicians and medical students may achieve in the face of seemingly enormous odds, whether in their native countries or through medical outreach programs like Doctors Without Borders. Infections and Inequalities combines thorough medical anthropological studies with a desire for solutions—remedies for the poor's plagues and the social maladies that have supported them.
