The twentieth century was known as the "Physics Century." Space, time, energy, entropy, and particles have all been studied at a much deeper level in the last 120 years. Relativity and quantum mechanics are examples of new paradigms of thought.
This is the first installment of the Understanding Modern Physics series, which covers special relativity, general relativity, and cosmology. Learners will learn: I How space and time are relative to observers, and how they are unified into a more fundamental construction of spacetime; (ii) Why spacetime is not absolute, but rather curves in response to matter, and how gravity emerges as a result of such spacetime curvature; and (iii) What is the framework for understanding the evolution of the entire universe, and how it is related to issues like the origin of space and matter, and the fate of our universe.- Note: the videos with a (*) are optional. They provide complementary information but not in the learning objective or assignment questions. Feel free to choose to watch them or not.

Quantum Physics: an overview of a weird world (Basics) is an introductory course (Basics) that stems from my desire to share what I've learned about the enigmatic and fascinating world of Quantum Physics. I felt it was necessary to create a serious introduction to the conceptual foundations of Quantum Physics, given how the media (and sometimes even physicists) present Quantum Theory, focusing only on highly dubious ideas and speculations backed by no evidence or, worse, promote pseudo-scientific hypes that come in and out of fashion on a regular basis. The second half (Supplemental), which concentrates on a few specific topics in greater depth, is also available on the Udemy platform.
A course on the conceptual basis of quantum physics, covering subjects that aren't covered in other basic courses. It will guide you step by step from the fundamentals of quantum mechanics to the most recent experiments and their ramifications.
For the self-taught physicist seeking a serious and rigorous introduction to quantum physics' underpinnings and some of its philosophical consequences. Except for some fundamental ideas in algebra, trigonometry, calculus, and statistics, this course does not require any technical experience. It is less difficult than a university course, but it does require more work than a popular science lecture. It may be easier for individuals who have some prior math knowledge, however a mathematical appendix is provided for those who need a refresher.
Requirements:
- Some lectures resort to high school math and some calculus.
- Example: Pythagorean theorem, square root, exponential, sin/cos functions, Cartesian coordinates, vectors, intuitive concept of a derivative, basic notion of a complex number.
- However, no university level required. In case you need a mathematical refresh an appendix will help you to recall some elementary mathematical concepts.
- Please take your time. Some concepts need time to be assimilated or may need to be viewed more than once. But at the end you will have a clarity of mind on the subject that you won't get elsewhere. It's worth it!
- The Udemy course "Physics: from Galileo to Einstein" could be useful (but is not mandatory) to the get in touch with the basic concepts of classical physics and that are used extensively in quantum physics as well.
Who this course is for:
- Everyone who is passionate about science and/or philosophy of science and is curious about the laws and the nature of the material universe.
- Undergraduates of physics who could profit from deepening first the conceptual foundations of quantum physics and which will better prepare them to deal with the meaning of the more abstract mathematical formalism they will encounter in their college courses.
- The course is well suited for all those non-physics university students who do not have sufficient mathematical background to go through a high-level QM course, but would like to assimilate the basics of quantum physics for the purpose of additional research. For instance philosophers, historians of science, IT students, engineers.
