Vermont

A road trip across Vermont in the fall is a great opportunity to observe the state's famous foliage. Begin in southern Vermont, at Brattleboro, then progress north. The first visit is at the West Dummerston Covered Bridge on Route 30, one of Vermont's more than 100 covered bridges. Continue along Route 100, which features a classic Vermont landscape. View the brilliant leaves in country shops and gorgeous views. Don't miss the Vermont Country Store in Weston for some Americana and one-of-a-kind items. Stowe, a lovely hamlet, is well worth a visit. A short stroll into Brigham Falls or Moss Glen Falls will provide you with a dose of lovely falling water to complement your autumn surroundings.

Stroll the picturesque streets of Stowe for fantastic shopping and dining. Try the gondola ride, which provides spectacular views of Mt. Mansfield, Vermont's highest peak. As you depart Stowe, don't forget to stop by the world-famous Ben & Jerry's Factory in Waterbury for an ice cream cone. Burlington, located farther north, is a thriving city. Visit Lake Champlain's Waterfront Park for views of the Adirondack Mountains in peak hues across the water. Church Street's pedestrian mall is ideal for shopping, dining, and people-watching. Make an overnight stay here to catch the greatest sunset in New England. Rooms at the Hilton Burlington provide views of Lake Champlain.

The Champlain Islands are the last stop on your autumn road trip. Look for the South Hero Island wayside small stone castles. For a flavor of local agrotourism, visit one of the apple orchards or the Snow Farm Vineyard and Winery. Crescent Bay Farm Bed & Breakfast, a renovated 1820s farmhouse, is an excellent location to stay.

Napa Valley, California

Looking for places to go leaf-peeping in California? Consider Napa Valley, a short drive from the San Francisco Bay Area, for a double dose of fall color on the region's trees and vineyards! Fall arrives later in the year in Napa Valley, with colors peaking between late October and mid-November. Tour some of the area's lovely vineyards to view the fall foliage. Some vineyards are placed high on hills, providing spectacular views of the vines below, which are colored in an orange patchwork quilt.

Yountville's main street is one of the top things to do in Napa Valley. Yountville is a lovely village in the valley, with mature trees that turn brilliant yellows, oranges, and reds in the fall. You may also see the fall foliage in the region by traveling around the countryside. Nearby Sonoma County is also great for leaf and vine peeping. Bring your appetite because eateries around the valley offer fall meals that feature the season's best flavors and textures!

Acadia National Park

The trip from Portland to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park takes roughly three hours, but there's much to see along the way. Highway 1 is the most gorgeous and fun road. This route is around 40 minutes longer, but it is definitely worth the extra journey. Visit the city's five lighthouses, the waterfront, and the Old Port area while in Portland. The Old Port is a historic neighborhood with cobblestone lanes and a variety of restaurants, boutiques, and specialized stores. Casco Bay is the ideal site in Portland to enjoy the fall colors. Keep an eye out for Oktoberfests and the Portland Harvest Festival in Portland.

There are many great areas to stretch your legs and explore as you go along the coast to Bar Harbor. Giant's Stairs, Harpswell, Popham Beach State Park, Muscongus Bay, and Searsport's Nature Preserves are some of the greatest stops on the journey to Bar Harbor. In the fall, Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park are stunning destinations. The greatest time to visit Acadia National Park to view the changing foliage is around mid-October. Rose Eden Lobster, the Bar Harbor Shore Path, and the Gaynes are all must-sees in Bar Harbor. Visit Cadillac Mountain, Jordan Pond, the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, and Sand Beach when visiting Acadia National Park. Acadia National Park is one of the most diverse and beautiful national parks in the United States.

Black Hills, South Dakota

The Black Hills of South Dakota is an underappreciated autumn destination. There are several gorgeous routes and fantastic walks to get out and simply observe the fall foliage that brightens up the area in September and October. The region is ideal in the fall since there are fewer people and the temperature is ideal, neither too hot nor too chilly. There are many wonderful activities to attend in the Black Hills in the fall. Stratobowl Historic Hot Air Balloon Launch, Deadwood Jam, Plein Air Paint Out, Custer State Park Buffalo Round-Up and Arts Festival, Great Downtown Pumpkin Festival, and Crazy Horse Fall Volksmarch are among them.

Deadwood Oktoberfest, Bierborse, Black Hills Powwow, and Deadweird are all held in October. Between all of these amazing fall activities, take some time to climb (Black Elk Peak or Cathedral Spires Trail) or take a picturesque drive (Iron Mountain Road or the Needles Highway). There is so much to do in the region, and the fall season is the greatest time to do it all.

New Hope, Pennsylvania

The riverfront town of New Hope, Pennsylvania, located between New York and Philadelphia, is a terrific fall getaway full of outdoor activities, shopping, and excellent places to dine. It's also one of the greatest sites in southeastern Pennsylvania to observe the fall foliage. New Hope is well-known for its lovely Main Street, which is lined with stores, and eateries, and offers views of the Delaware River. Leather artists and jewelry businesses are among the shops, as are interesting gifts, clothing, and souvenirs. Visitors will also discover various wineries and tasting rooms on Main Street and in the surrounding region, which are especially enjoyable to visit in the fall when there are harvest-related special events.

Riding the New Hope Railroad is one of the most interesting things to do in New Hope. The railroad connects Bucks County to Philadelphia and was built in the late 1800s. Throughout October, visitors may ride this lovely, leaf-filled stretch aboard a 1925 steam locomotive that makes special journeys to observe the local colors. New Hope is also a fantastic starting place for a scenic trip down Route 32, which follows the Delaware River on a magnificent journey covered with yellow, crimson, and orange foliage. Visitors seeking pumpkin fields and orchards in New Hope are spoiled with choice, with several farms offering pick-your-own hours and delicacies such as fresh apple cider and apple cider doughnuts.

Sedona, Arizona

Mild temps, red cliffs, golden foliage, and a chance of snow - if that sounds like your ideal autumn holiday, then Sedona is for you. In this sweltering desert, the months of October and November provide a welcome reduction in temperature, allowing for some of the most ideal trekking and touring conditions of the year. Although Sedona is stunning all year, the fall season is when this red-rock town truly shines! Hike one of Sedona's greatest trails, such as the Bell Rock Trail, Red Rock Crossing Trail, Devil's Bridge, or Cathedral Rock, and then refuel at Heartline Cafe or Etch Kitchen and Bar.

If money isn't an issue, Mii Amo is one of the greatest luxury hotels in Sedona. This all-inclusive spa with mountain views was named Travel & Leisure's Top Destination Spa in 2020 and is likely to steal your breath away. You may get the most bang for your money by staying in the adjacent community of Village of Oak, which is just 10 minutes south of Sedona. There are several paths that begin here as well, and the vistas are just as breathtaking. Everything you need is right here, from grocery stores to restaurants, cafés, and plenty of Airbnb alternatives. If you enjoy wildlife, fall is an excellent season to attempt to locate some of Sedona's natural residents.

Hanover, New Hamphire

The route between Boston, Massachusetts, and Hanover, New Hampshire is an epic fall road trip that embodies the heart of New England. You may spend time in Boston, a huge city with tons of history, food, and shopping, and then in Hanover, a little college town with a gorgeous Main Street and lots of cute restaurants and stores. Boston is an excellent walking city. There are several hotels in downtown Boston, including the Hyatt Regency, which is ideally positioned along the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile walk that connects 16 historical landmarks. You can also join a cuisine tour.

The road from Boston to Hanover is largely level, passing through woodlands and rolling hills. It is loaded with trees with spectacular red, orange, and yellow leaves in the fall. Hanover, just on the Vermont border, is a wonderful place to wander and explore. The Hanover Inn, located across from Dartmouth College and at the beginning of Main Street, is one of the greatest locations to stay. Dartmouth College provides daily tours of its lovely historical buildings. If you enjoy hiking, you may reach the Appalachian Trail from there. The magnificent fall foliage will take your breath away if you go exploring in the fall.

Quandary Peak, Colorado

Quandary Peak is one of Colorado's fourteeners and a popular hiking destination. It is the tallest mountain in the Tenmile Range of the Rocky Mountains, being 14,271 feet tall. The hiking path up the mountain is popular, although it is not an easy climb. The track is 12 kilometers long and climbs 1000 meters. It took my husband and me three hours to climb and two hours to descend.

The initial section of the route is pretty straightforward and progressively ascends through a woodland. This is one of the most beautiful areas of the path in the fall, especially with the golden aspen trees. The sights become better and better as you ascend higher. Beautiful views of the valley below are available just beyond the treeline, with a color palette of red, orange, and yellow. This is also the point at which the trek becomes more difficult; the final section is more of a scramble over loose rocks, so proceed with caution. From the summit of Quandary Peak, you may enjoy breathtaking 360-degree vistas and witness more gorgeous fall colors in the neighboring valleys.

Bring a jacket because it's windy up there. Also, take suitable hiking boots because there was some snowfall at the peak in mid-September. Quandary Peak is adjacent to Breckenridge, a gorgeous mountain community and one of Colorado's most popular spots to see the fall colors. Breckenridge, due to its high elevation, is one of the earliest spots in the United States where the leaves begin to change color, often as early as Labor Day!

Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is regarded for being one of the most haunted cities in the United States, so it's a great destination to come to in October. There are ghost tours abounding, eerie fall décor galore, and restaurants serving seasonal fall meals. Because Savannah is so far south, the leaves do not change colors until late October or early November. After admiring the fall foliage in Connecticut, Vermont, or North Carolina, make your way to Savannah, where trees in Forsyth Park are still covered in beautiful golden leaves as late as mid-December. Savannah's fall weather is rather pleasant. Even in late November, you can go about without needing much more than a light jacket or sweater.

It's fun to go around the Historic District and see pumpkins along the curved stairs of an older home or catch a glimpse of fall color bursting out from someone's private garden. Fall is also usually jam-packed with events. Oktoberfest, Tybee Pirate Fest, Jazz Festival, Savannah PRIDE, and the Rock & Roll Marathon are all options for visitors. There are also cuisine festivals! There is also a Greek and Jewish cuisine festival, as well as the Savannah Food & Wine Festival. While you're there, make a trip down to River Street and have a caramel apple from River Street Sweets! It's soothing to sit on a bench near the sea and watch the sun fade into yellow and orange hues as massive cargo ships arrive and depart from Savannah's port.

Hudson Valley, New York

The Hudson Valley in New York is an excellent location for an autumn trip. There is a lot to do. It is a hiker's heaven if you enjoy being active. The High Peterskill Path in Mohonk Preserve and the Minnewaska Lake Loop trail in Minnewaska State Park both lead to viewpoints with spectacular views of fall woodlands. The Mohonk Mountain House is a lovely spot to stay, with several hiking paths nearby. There are fantastic drives throughout the valley to soak in the fall colors if you want a more sedentary experience.

The two middle weekends in October are traditionally the greatest dates for peak autumn foliage, but because the valley runs from New York City in the south to Albany three hours to the north, the leaf-peeping season is rather long. Another enjoyable activity is to visit one of the numerous farms that are open for fall activities. There are several apple orchards where you may pick your own apples. Hayrides, corn mazes, and even pumpkin patches are available to help you get into the Halloween spirit. Continue the Halloween fun at the Great Jack o'Lantern Blaze, where over 3,000 pumpkins are carved and placed in intricate displays that grow year after year. It's a breathtaking sight.

Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

Grand Teton National Park is beautiful at any time of year, but autumn is especially beautiful for a variety of reasons. Mother Nature dips her brush in a bursting palette of vibrant reds, burnt oranges, and neon yellows from early September to mid-October to offer a spectacular background for enjoying its beautiful animals, untamed recreation, and far fewer visitors. Historically, this spectacular color shift occurs about the third week of September and lasts until early October, but it's important to note that temperature, sunshine, and rainfall all have a role in the development of coloring.

When leaves change color is determined by local meteorological factors such as rainfall levels and nighttime temperatures, so check the Grand Teton National Park Fall foliage reports periodically before heading out. Hike Swift Creek to see the Tetons' fall color carpet on foot, then reward tired feet with a dip in the hot waters of Granite Hot Springs. Alternatively, travel to the south side of Jenny Lake, one of the world's most beautiful lakes, and join an easy-to-moderate ranger-led morning trek to Moose Ponds, followed by a meandering canoe ride with your camera in hand. There are eight lodging options located within the Grand Teton National Park grounds, Jenny Lake Lodge and Jackson Lake Lodge offer all the amenities and all the views, but be aware that many are seasonal.

Boston, Massachusetts

It's no secret that travelers from all over the world flock to New England each fall in search of the ideal "leaf-peeping" experience around the area. You arrived in Boston at the appropriate time. If you're staying in Boston, Toplist recommends staying in the Back Bay or Fenway areas so you don't have to go far to see anything. It's simple to start your day with a visit to Copley Square from here. Don't miss the two gorgeous cathedrals and the Boston Public Library—certainly among the city's most stunning structures.

The Library's Bates Room, in particular, exudes back-to-school feelings with its exquisite lighting and vintage book collections, which are ideal for October. You may window shop on Newbury Street before traveling one block to the Commonwealth Avenue Mall, where trees arch over the main pathway in full October splendor. For additional fall colors, visit the Fens or any of the Emerald Necklace parks, which are ablaze with color each October and are incredibly magnificent.

Then, take the green line or a ride-sharing service to the North End. Take in the sights of Boston's famous Italian neighborhood from this vantage point. You may eat lunch in the North End, where there are several Italian restaurants, or go downtown to Chinatown for dumplings or dim sum. With their cobblestone pathways and picturesque structures, nearby Faneuil Hall and Beacon Hill are other lovely fall attractions. Don't forget to take some shots on Acorn Street! Consider indulging in a distinctively New England fall activity: apple harvesting, on one of the afternoons.

Aspen, Colorado

Aspen is well-known for its skiing, but few people realize that it is also a fantastic spot to visit in the autumn to view the fall colors. It is a terrific fall trip to view the Aspen trees turning golden yellow. It is named for the gorgeous Aspen trees. The finest time to visit Aspen is in late September and early October when the fall colors are at their optimum. Denver International Airport is the closest international and popular airport for affordable flights to Aspen. In October and September, Aspen is around 2 hours from Denver and may be accessed by the picturesque Independence Pass.

Visiting Maroon Bells State Park while in Aspen is highly recommended. The walks up these twin peaks are beautiful, and the fall colors are some of the greatest in Aspen. Also, for more spectacular fall colors, wander around North Star Nature Preserve. Another intriguing thing to do is ride the gondola to Aspen Mountain for spectacular mountain vistas. The St. Regis Aspen Resort and the Aspen Meadows Resort are both excellent places to stay in Aspen. If the hotels in Aspen are fully booked or too pricey, consider staying in Snowmass, a neighboring hamlet.

Portland, Oregon

When it comes to fall vacations in the United States, Toplist believes Portland, Oregon is one of the greatest possibilities. Portland has something for everyone, whether you want to see the city or go on an outdoor adventure. During the summer, Portland is a favorite jumping-off point for coastlines, cities, mountains, and National Parks. However, as fall arrives, the people thin out and you can truly get to know the place. Furthermore, throughout the region, there are several food trucks serving delectable cuisine ranging from wood-fired pizza to Asian fusion to Argentinian and more.

But don't worry if food trucks aren't your thing! Portland also boasts several alternatives, including Nak Won (a Korean restaurant specializing in hand-pulled noodles), Le Pigeon (a French restaurant that consistently ranks high on best restaurant lists), and El Gaucho (an upscale steakhouse that delivers an exceptional experience with delicious food). Hiking around Portland, in particular, is one of the most popular fall activities. With the summer crowds gone, the weather pleasant, and the trails less frequented, it's the ideal time to enjoy the region's natural splendor.

Salt Lake City, Utah

Take a stroll down Main Street in Utah's capital to see a spectacular display of skyscrapers and yellow foliage. Salt Lake City is an excellent place to visit to enjoy conveniently accessible fall colors. Within the city, Liberty Park and Memory Grove Park have late-season autumn leaves, as does City Creek Canyon. Head to Millcreek Canyon, Big Cottonwood Canyon, and Little Cottonwood Canyon for lengthier walks and breathtaking autumn foliage. One thing to do in Salt Lake City is to walk along Temple Street, beginning at Temple Square, and appreciate the 12 blocks of stunning architecture framed by autumn foliage.

Fall is also a busy season for events in Salt Lake City, such as Oktoberfest at Snowbird (August to October). The Utah State Fair in September is great for exciting activities and local goodies, as is the Urban Arts Festival, which has street art and dance, and the Squatters Beer Festival, which has been going on for 30 years. The Salt Lake Farmers Market (June to October) is a great place to meet farmers and producers and sample fresh fruit, pies, jams, and other local food.
