    Van Gogh is Bipolar

This chaotic eatery, which is every bit as interesting as it sounds, is housed in a tiny area crammed with curios and artworks. It's led by artist Jetro, who prepares completely unique and delectable meals in a riotous atmosphere where you'll almost certainly dine wearing a flashy hat (grab one from the hatstand). Dinners consist of three to five courses, while lunch is a la carte.

Jetro created the space as a haven to help him with non-pharmaceutical treatment for his bipolar disorder. The dining room has a beautiful lemongrass scent, and the food is made using natural ingredients that are said to have mood-enhancing characteristics. Dinner reservations are strongly advised, especially on weekends. Van Gogh is Bipolar is truly a driving force behind Maginhawa St's rise as a gastronomic hotspot in Manila.

    Antonio’s

If you can get a reservation, this premium French-Euro-Filipino eatery gives the opportunity to rub shoulders with politicians and oligarchs over delectably presented meals ranging from foie gras raclette to roast suckling pig. Some magnificent tables in elegant dining rooms overlook lotus ponds and a lush tropical garden are available for seating. The Lanai Lounge, a fantastic garden cocktail bar, is also available.

Weekend reservations should be made months in advance. Antonio's has two satellite restaurants in Tagaytay proper, both of which are good but not identical to the original. The turnoff is located 7.6 kilometers west of the rotunda.

  3. A stylish open-plan warehouse with hessian bags of single-origin green beans on show in the glassed-in 'green room,' as well as drawers of roasted beans to smell. Huge breakfasts, gourmet sandwiches, and New Orleans–style baby back ribs are among the menu's highlights.

On Wednesdays and Saturdays, at Coffee Empire, you can see them roast coffee, and they also do cuppings (check the website).

    Guerrera

This restaurant, set in a beautiful yellow villa on an isolated stretch of waterfront, raises Camiguin's gastronomic reputation significantly. The culinary-school-trained Filipino owner-chef specializes in Thai and Vietnamese street food, as well as daily specialities such as Indonesian-style chicken and Bangkok pork.

Desserts and drinks are similarly inventive – the thaitini is a must-try (rice wine and Thai basil). There are four lovely rooms available, as well as cookery classes at Guerrera .

    Sala

For nearly 15 years, this sophisticated European bistro, Sala has been regarded as Manila's best. It is run by Scottish chef-owner Colin Mackay, who also owns People's Palace and Blackbird.

Sala offers excellent service as well as a constantly changing menu of fusion cuisine and inventive desserts. The P2900 five-course tasting menu is a decent option; add P1450 for wine pairings with each dish.

    Calle Brewery

This locally owned craft brewery also serves as the best restaurant in Vigan. It's a smokehouse, so pick your meat and a couple of sides to go with it, and wash it down with some craft beer. Even paying for 'premium' beef, the dish is excellent value (recommended). There's also a wine and tapas bar where you can buy 12-course Ilocano tasting menus in advance (per person P1800).

For P150 per person, including a flight, you may take a tour of the Calle Brewery in this century-and-a-half-old mansion.

  7. This wonderfully restored colonial-era mansion is one of Davao's jewels, with polished wood flooring, carved trellis work, and a white clapboard exterior. Claude's is the city's most elegant and romantic restaurant, and its cuisine matches its ambiance. The specialty is steaks by weight, which range from T-bones to wild boar and deer, although seafood and pasta meals are also excellent.

Reservations are recommended at Claude’s Le Cafe De Ville because the wine list is wide.

  8. Locavore creates French-inspired variations on Filipino staples like Bicol exprés (spicy minced pork), kaldereta (beef stew), and, of course, halo-halo, using locally sourced ingredients to amazing effect (various fruit preserves served in shaved ice and milk). The famous lechón (suckling pig roast) and oyster sisig are to die for.

    Log Cabin

This aptly named restaurant, which seems like a warm ski lodge with a roaring log fire and a fleece-clad multinational audience, is one of Sagada's many wonderful surprises. Roast meats with local vegetables or pasta are only a few of the dishes on the menu, which are accompanied by a small wine list. Make a reservation for the popular Saturday-night buffet in advance.

Upstairs, Log Cabin has three cozy rooms for rent (double including breakfast P1500).

    Kalui

In Puerto Princesa, this no-shoes eatery is a local institution. It has a great Balinese vibe about it, with colorful murals, sculptures, and masks adorning the walls, and a general aura of friendliness.

At Kalui, gourmets can choose from a variety of fish options, all paired with vegetables and a seaweed salad, or go for the lavish set meal (P795), which includes dessert of coconut flan. Reservations are strongly advised, particularly for dinner and large parties.

    Artisans

The owner of Artisans, a Scot, refers to the style as 'obscurity,' and it essentially consists of whatever he likes. The menu is a cross-cultural mix of tikka masala, Mexican, Indonesian rendang, sloppy joes, giant salad bowls, and – for drinkers – margaritas. He takes an unconventional method, yet he manages to pull it off.

Both the music and the design are varied at Artisans. For a picnic meal, remove the sandwich coverings.

  12. The medium-crust pizza here is the best in Puerto Galera, loaded with mozzarella and fresh toppings. It doesn't look like much – literally a lean-to with only a few tables – but the medium-crust pizza here is the best in Puerto Galera, heaped with mozzarella and fresh toppings. The kitchen is staffed by a tall Italian who serves a modest menu of pizza, pasta, and salads. The pizzas serve two people, making this a great deal.

It's located 5 kilometers west of Puerto Galera town, and across from the Ponderosa Golf & Country Club turn-off, Arcobaleno Pizzeria & Ristorante s definitely a wonderful eatery to enjoy your meal!

  13. Manileos are enthusiastic about Japanese food, and no one has caught the wave quite like Mecha Uma's senior chef Bruce Ricketts.

Bruce Ricketts meticulously sources the best tuna and other ingredients for his little meals, which could include hand rolls, aburi sushi, or mini Japanese–style tacos. He is a US–trained Filipino. Take a seat at the chef's table for the omakase (tasting menu) (reservations essential).
