  1. When you go canyoning in Puerto Rico, you may pack a lot of action and many more memories! Canyoning, also known as canyoneering, is a popular outdoor sport that involves rappelling, trekking, body rafting, and other techniques to explore gorges.

There are several levels, ranging from easy to difficult, that can be completed in various places of the world, and Puerto Rico is no exception. The island's Class 1 (simple) rivers and rock towers give the perfect setting for a safe, exhilarating, and environmentally friendly expedition.

Another popular excursion is to Caón San Cristóbal (Saint Christopher Canyon), a 5.6-mile real cleft in the Earth with a running river, natural ponds, and waterfalls at the bottom, located in the mountain village of Barranquitas. Several companies, including Go Hiking Puerto Rico and Para La Naturaleza, the nonprofit conservation organization that gave the canyon its protected status, offer excursions of varying difficulty levels, some of which consist solely of hiking and others of which include rappelling down into (and out of) the canyon.

Although no prior experience is required and the difficulty level is moderate, it is advised that you be in good physical shape, free of medical or physical issues, and be able to swim. It is also not recommended for pregnant women to partake in these activities.

  2. Camuy is a village on the northwest coast of the Atlantic Ocean with one major claim to fame: the Ro Camuy Cave Park. It has the world's third-largest cavern system with a running underground river. It drew hundreds of visitors each week, both residents and tourists, for decades. There are plenty other attractions to see in the "Romantic City" (no one is quite sure why Camuy is called this).

The Ro Camuy Cave Park is home to the world's third-largest underground river and has the most extensive cave network in the Western Hemisphere. Over 220 underground caves and caverns may be found in the cave system, which runs over 10 miles beneath the city's bustle. The Camuy River has shaped the stalactites, stalagmites, and other rock formations over thousands of years.

The park is open from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. AST on Wednesday through Sunday. It is not necessary to make a reservation. Please contact the town's tourism office at 787-898-1556 for further information.

  3. Cueva del Viento (Wind Cavern), one of the Most Impressive Caves in Puerto Rico, located in the Guajataca State Forest near the northwestern town of Isabela, is easily accessible by trails that begin at the parking area and ranger station at KM 9 on Route 446.

Cueva del Viento is a volcanic cavity found in the same-named district of Icod de los Vinos. It was produced 27,000 years ago in basaltic lavas from the Pico Viejo volcano's initial eruptive phase, close to Mount Teide (Tenerife, Canary Islands). This lava tube, dubbed "Cave of the Wind" because of the strong winds that pass through it, is the world's fifth longest (18 kilometers documented to date), trailing only the four that can be found on the largest island of the Hawaiian archipelago (United States). It's a massive underground labyrinth with numerous unexplored branching that will likely grow to its overall length in the future.

Steps lead down from the cave entrance, but there is no lighting or guardrails inside, so wear sturdy shoes and bring flashlights if you wish to explore the cave. Beautiful stalactite and stalagmite formations adorn the cave's limestone walls. Be aware that the cave is also home to a large number of bats.

  4. Cueva del Indio, or Indian Cave, located right on the raging Atlantic shore and is named after the indigenous hieroglyphs cut into the rocks, is among the Most Impressive Caves in Puerto Rico. Cueva del Indio is a prehistoric rock art site near Las Piedras, Puerto Rico, that is now a public park. In 2003, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The site's artifacts appear to date from the Late Ceramic Period's third phase, about from A.D. 1200 to 1500.

The entrance charge is $5, and it grants you access to breathtaking cliffs, crashing waves, and a natural bridge made of rocks. There used to be a ladder leading down to the cave, but it was destroyed by Hurricane Mara.

Climbers with experience can still descend to the cave, which contains rock engravings created by the Tanos, a people who resided on the island before Columbus and the Spaniards came.
