Bait Al Maqham
Bait Al Maqham is nestled among the plantations in the charming suburbs of the wilayat of Bawsher, adjacent to Muscat's main city. Surprisingly, this magnificent property surrounded by breathtaking views is tucked away amid the city's remaining sand dunes. Bait al Maqham, being the oldest building in the area, has become an essential pillar in the techniques and methods of Omani architecture blended with the military character, which gave it practical, architectural, and artistic importance at the time it was erected.
More than simply a house, it was created for defense, making it an ideal location to study the construction of old Omani fortifications and how they have aided the community's growth by providing security and safety.
Bait Al Maqham was built on an uneven space due to the slope of the structure in the southeast corner, which resulted in the irregular measurement of the four sides. It has three storeys in succession. The first floor consists of four rooms of irregular space that open with door entrances on a central hall with a 12.50 meter longitudinal length from the entry to the southern wall. It is covered from the top with a wooden ceiling based on three pointed arches supported on six rectangular trusses.
The second floor consists of the eastern and western arcades, each of which comprises two rooms that open with door entrances to the exposed middle courtyard, which is 12.40 meters long from north to south, while the third floor consists of one room in the southeastern corner, and the roof is surrounded by a one-meter-high stone fence topped by military merlons. The lone castle tower, which is 16.35 meters high, is located in the northwest corner, while the main entrance to the castle, which is one of the most well-known hollow entrances, is located in the middle of the northern façade.
