Mutrah Souq

Nguyen Kieu Trang

Mutrah Souq is one of the oldest markets in the Arab world. This antiquity may have enhanced its beauty, mystique, and attraction. In the 1960s, the market was a source of supply for Omanis, where they could acquire their needs for simpler life necessities. There were foreign commodities as well as indigenous products such as fruits, vegetables, textiles, and dates. Traditional fabrics, clothes, jewelry, incense, frankincense, pipes, ceramics, and craftwork are available at the souk. Visitors can buy Bedouin jewelry and apparel, as well as Khanjars and coffee pots as mementos.

Mutrah Souq features tiny winding alleyways covered in wood. With its maze of lanes and roadways lined with businesses that obscure the sun throughout the day, this souk is known as the Market of Darkness among local Omanis. This term refers to the area that stretches from the Prophet's Mosque to Khawr Bimbah. Because the crowded stalls and lanes do not allow the sun's rays to infiltrate through during the day and the shoppers need lamplights to see where they were going.

As if two titles were not enough for this souk, the east and west portions of Mutrah Souq, split by Khawr Bimbah, are also known as "the tiny market" and "the vast market," respectively. The Market of Darkness is the tiny market, while the wholesale market is the vast market.
