CAIRO UNIVERSITY
Cairo University was known as the Egyptian University from 1908 to 1940, and King Fuad I University from 1940 to 1952. The university's main campus is in Giza, Egypt, which is directly across the Nile River from Cairo. It was created on December 21, 1908, but the faculties, beginning with the Faculty of Arts, were moved to their current Giza location in October 1929 after being housed in several places throughout Cairo. It is Egypt's second-oldest institution of higher education, after Al Azhar University, notwithstanding the pre-existing higher professional institutions that subsequently became constituent colleges of the university.
Cairo University has a School of Law and a School of Medicine. The Medical School, also known as Kasr Alaini, was one of the first medical schools in Africa and the Middle East. The original structure was built by Alaini Pasha. It has grown tremendously since then. From 1925 to 1941, Professor Ahmed Lutfi el-Sayed served as the first president of Cairo University, then known as the Egyptian University. The University's 20 colleges and three institutions have approximately 155,000 students enrolled. It is one of the top 50 institutions in the world in terms of enrollment and has three Nobel Laureates among its alumni.
