UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA
The University of Pretoria is a public research university in Pretoria, South Africa's administrative and de facto capital, with various campuses. In 1908, the Pretoria campus of the Johannesburg-based Transvaal University College was given university status, making it the fourth South African institution to do so in continuous existence. In 2019, the school has grown from 32 students in a single late Victorian house to about 53,000 students. The institution was built on seven outlying campuses spread across 1,190 hectares of land (2,900 acres).
Several alumni have worked as judges on the High Court, Supreme Court of Appeal, and Constitutional Court, as well as UN Special Rapporteurs and the United Nations International Law Commission. Johann van der Westhuizen is a judge on the South African Constitutional Court. Thabo Mbeki appointed him to the bench in 2004. He is now a member of the Centre for Human Rights' board of directors as well as the University of Pretoria Council.
