The Charité in Berlin is one of Europe's major university hospitals. It is one of Germany's largest research and acute care hospitals, with the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft's Collaborative Research Centers (CRC). From 2012 to 2019, Focus was named first out of over 1,000 hospitals in Germany.
In 1710, the hospital was built north of the Berlin City Walls in response to an epidemic of plague in East Prussia. Following the epidemic, the hospital was converted into a humanitarian hospital for the destitute. Frederick William I named the hospital Charité on January 9, 1727. (i.e., charity).
