The Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH) is the teaching hospital and biomedical research institution of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. It was founded in 1889 in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. Johns Hopkins Hospital and its medical school are regarded as the founding institutions of modern American medicine, as well as the cradle of various prominent medical traditions. Many medical specialties were developed at the hospital, including neurosurgery, which was founded by Harvey Cushing and Walter Dandy, heart surgery, which was founded by Alfred Blalock, and child psychiatry, which was founded by Leo Kanner. The Johns Hopkins Children's Center, which is attached to the hospital, serves newborns, children, teens, and young adults ages 0–21.
The Johns Hopkins Hospital is widely considered as one of the top hospitals and medical organizations in the world. It was named the greatest overall hospital in America by U.S. News & World Report for 21 consecutive years (1991–2011). In 2019–2020, U.S. News & World Report scored the hospital on 15 adult specialties and 10 pediatric specialties, placing it first in Maryland and third nationally, trailing only the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and Mass General in Boston, Massachusetts.
