Carnegie Mellon University includes about 12,000 students as well as 5,000 academic and staff members. The primary campus is in Pittsburgh, although there are other locations in Qatar and Silicon Valley.

The institution comprises seven schools and colleges, and the College of Engineering, with about 4,000 students, accounts for 30 percent of the total student population. Almost one-fifth of the college's undergraduates come from countries other than the United States.

Carnegie is likely best recognized for its robotics research and skill, having produced software that directs NASA's Mars rovers and accident prevention systems in automobiles. The current focus of research in this subject is on building systems to assist the elderly with home tasks, responding to natural or man-made disasters, and a 2015 attempt to put a robot on the moon.
