Imperial College's main campus in West London, where it specializes in giving courses and sponsoring research in science, engineering, and medicine, was officially part of the University of London until 2007 when it became totally autonomous as part of its centennial celebrations. The institution has 14,400 students and 3,300 faculty members divided into three faculties: engineering, medicine, and natural sciences. There are around 4,500 international students enrolled. The Engineering faculty is one of the largest in Europe, with 1,500 students studying anything from mechanical engineering to computer science.
Engineering research at the institution spans a wide range of topics, such as research into catalytic converters in automobiles and carbon dioxide storage in rocks. Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of penicillin, and H.G. Wells are among Imperial's prominent graduates. According to reports, the institution possesses the world's largest brain bank for Parkinson's and Multiple Sclerosis research.
