Denver International Airport

The next position on the list of the largest airports in the world is the Denver International Airport which is a major gateway to the Front Range Urban Corridor and the metropolitan area of Denver, Colorado, in the Western United States. It is the second-biggest airport in the world (after King Fahd International Airport) and the largest airport in North America by land area at 135.7 km2. With a length of 4.88 km, Runway 16R/34L is the seventh-longest runway in the world and the longest public runway in North America. It replaced the original Stapleton International Airport, which was located 31 km from downtown Denver. The airport is really closer to the City of Aurora than to downtown Denver, and many airport-related services, such as hotels, are situated in Aurora.


The fourth airport in the US to serve more than 200 destinations, Denver International Airport was opened in 1995 and today offers non-stop service to 215 locations on 23 different airlines' routes throughout North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia. Southwest Airlines' primary operational base is at the airport, which also serves as a significant hub for United Airlines and Frontier Airlines. The airport is Colorado's largest employer with nearly 35,000 workers. In close proximity to the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, the airport is situated on the western side of the Great Plains.
