Orlando International Airport
The next position on the list of the largest airports in the world is the Orlando International Airport situated 10 kilometers (6 miles) southeast of Downtown Orlando, Florida. It was the busiest airport in the state and the tenth busiest airport in the country in 2019 with 50,613,072 passengers handled. The airport's former name, McCoy Air Force Base, a Strategic Air Command (SAC) post that was shut down in 1975 as part of a general military drawdown following the conclusion of the Vietnam War, is represented by the airport code MCO.
The airport acts as a central city for Frontier Airlines, a hub for Silver Airways, and an operating base for JetBlue, Southwest, and Spirit Airlines. By the number of passengers transported, Southwest is the airport's top airline. With more than 850 daily flights on 44 carriers, the airport also serves as a significant international entry point for the mid-Florida region. Additionally, 135 local and foreign destinations are served by the airport. MCO is one of the largest commercial airports in the United States in terms of land size, with a total of 5,100 ha. United Airlines also has a maintenance facility at the airport. Up until 2007, the airport served as a hub for Delta Air Lines.
