Shanghai Pudong International Airport
One of Shanghai's two international airports and a significant East Asian aviation center is Shanghai Pudong International Airport. Shanghai-Hongqiao, the city's other major airport, primarily handles domestic and regional flights in East Asia, while Pudong Airport handles both international flights and a smaller number of domestic flights. Pudong Airport is a 40-square-kilometer facility located in eastern Pudong, roughly 30 kilometers east of the city's core and close to the sea. Shanghai Airport Authority runs the airport.
The airport serves as the primary international hub for Air China, the primary domestic hub for China Eastern Airlines, the primary hub for Shanghai Airlines, and the secondary hub for China Southern Airlines. Additionally, it serves as the hub for privately held Juneyao Airlines and Spring Airlines as well as FedEx, UPS, and DHL's Asia-Pacific cargo hub. According to reports, the DHL hub, which was inaugurated in July 2012, is the biggest express hub in Asia.
Four operable parallel runways were located on either side of Pudong Airport's two main passenger terminals. The airport's yearly capacity will increase from 60 million to 80 million people and six million tons of freight when a third passenger terminal, a satellite terminal, and two more runways open in 2021.
