Washington Dulles International Airport
Washington Dulles International Airport, also known as Dulles International Airport, Dulles Airport, Washington Dulles, or simply Dulles, is a major hub for international travel in the Eastern United States. It is situated in the Virginian counties of Loudoun and Fairfax, 42 kilometers west of the capital city.
It was established in 1962 and is named after John Foster Dulles, the 52nd Secretary of State of the United States who served under President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1888–1959). Eero Saarinen, who also designed the renowned TWA terminal at New York's JFK airport, is credited with creating the Dulles main terminal, a well-known landmark. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority manages the 52.6 km2 Washington Dulles Airport, which is located on the Loudoun-Fairfax border. The airport is located primarily in the unincorporated area of Dulles in Loudoun County, with a minor fraction also located in Chantilly in Fairfax County.
Some of Dulles' domestic routes have been weakened by increased domestic travel from Reagan National Airport. In terms of overall enplanements, Dulles passed Reagan in 2019. However, after seeing a decline in traffic since 2015, Dulles Airport surpassed Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) in terms of annual passenger boardings in 2018. In terms of total yearly passenger boardings, it is still second only to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI).
