Federico Santa María Technical University
The Federico Santa María Technical Institution (UTFSM) is a Chilean university in Valparaso, Chile, that was founded in 1926. The institution has campuses in Valparais and Ecuador, as well as an international campus. Several important businesspeople, engineers, and Chilean scientists attended Federico Santa Mara Technical University. Sansanos are the students and alumni of the school.
In 1962, the UTFSM became the first university in Chile to award a doctorate in engineering, as well as the first higher-education institution in Latin America to do so. The UTFSM university radio station is Latin America's oldest campus radio station.
The university is noted for its tough study requirements, challenging study program, and for being Chile's only engineering university that requires physical training as a required part of the curriculum in both its Valparaiso and Santiago campuses.
The UTFSM has long been regarded as one of the country's most prominent engineering schools, and more recently, with the publication of national and international rankings, has been ranked among Chile's and Latin America's top universities. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2001–2002 place it first in Chile and second in Latin America.
