University of Los Lagos
The University of Los Lagos, established in 1993, is the sole public university in Chile's magnificent Lakes area. It was founded on the foundations of existing institutions that grew out of the University of Chile and the Technical University of Chile. Higher education had been available in Osorno since 1964, through the Professional Institute, which arose from the dissolution of the Technical University in 1981, along with other options in Puerto Montt.
Its function as a regional institution is emphasized by its purpose to produce "professionals and technicians with solid knowledge, pluralistic, and committed to their environment." The Lagos region is home to more than 80% of the pupils. The University of Los Lagos is one of 16 Chilean Sustainable Campus Network members dedicated to both relevant research and sustainable operations.
Aquaculture is one of 14 academic divisions, including fish farming outposts in Quinchao and Rio Sur, as well as a 300-hectare forest in Barrio del Rio Bueno, reflecting the local economy. iMar, which was founded in 2002 and focuses on the environment and resource challenges of coastal regions, is one of the more established research centers. A chair in cooperation and a diploma in business management geared at cooperative managers were recently formed in collaboration with nine cooperative firms in the region.
