  1. The Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (PUC or UC) is one of six Catholic universities in Chile's university system, and one of the country's two pontifical universities. It is one of Chile's oldest universities, as well as one of Latin America's most well-known educational institutions, having been founded in 1888.


    The competition between the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and the University of Chile is deep and long-standing, as the former is often regarded as the country's most traditional and distinguished institution, while the latter is secular. This rivalry extends to sports, particularly football.


    According to the Shanghai ranking, UC is among the top 10 Latin American universities. UC is ranked first in two subject categories: Economics and Management (about 101–150), Information Technology (approximately 101–150) and Mathematics (around 151-200).


    PUC is a multi-campus, private, metropolitan university. It is one of eleven Catholic universities in Chile, as well as one of the twenty-five universities that make up the Rectors' Council, Chile's state-sponsored university system. Although it is not state-owned, it is one of the Universities of the Rectors' Council of Chilean Universities, and a significant portion of its budget is provided by state transfers under various programs.


    Two of the world's most prominent university rankings, the QS World University Rankings (in 2018, 2019 and 2020) and the Times Higher Education University Rankings, have named the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile as the greatest university in Latin America (2019 and 2020)

  2. In 1982, Diego Portales University (UDP) was established. It was the creation of the founders of the Professional Institute of Sales and Advertising (IPEVE), which had been around for about 20 years at the time.


    The Bachelor of Arts degree program was established in 1994 after degree courses in advertising and design were transferred from IPEVE to Diego Portales University. The Faculty of Architecture, Design, and Fine Arts was established in 1999, as was the Faculty of Humanities.


    In 2002, UDP took a stride forward in its development by launching new programs and branching out into two new disciplines of study: health and education. The next year, UDP devised a strategy for long-term infrastructure growth that included the issuance of a World Bank-guaranteed Security Bond worth around US$25 million, making it the first educational institution to do so.


    In more than 25 countries, UDP has forged partnerships and agreements with prestigious universities, research institutes, foundations, and international organizations. UDP has partnerships in place with 120 universities.


    Because of the growing relevance of knowledge in national development, UDP has launched a research and knowledge production program aimed at finding answers to high-impact national problems.

  3. The Universidad of Desarrollo (or University for Development/ UDD) is a private Chilean university that is one of the most expensive in the region.


    The University of Concepción was formed in 1990 in the home of a well-known family on Trinitarias Street in Concepción.

    The first degree awarded was a bachelor's degree in business administration. Architecture, journalism, and a law school were added the next year.


    Its main campus was opened in 1993. The following year, industrial engineering and social science programs were established. The university was granted autonomy from Chile's Catholic University in 1997.


    América Economía, one of Latin America's most significant business journals, named UDD's MBA faculty top in Latin America. It was also ranked 12th among all Latin American business schools for its MBA program. UDD was also named first in Latin American colleges for promoting entrepreneurial and leadership skills among its students, according to América Economía magazine.


    The Medicine School of UDD was placed second in Chile in the national medical test in 2017, outperforming most traditional universities in the country. Furthermore, according to the national CNAP accreditation scheme, UDD is now ranked as Chile's finest private institution, ranking 5th overall.

  4. The University of Los Lagos, established in 1993, is the sole public university in Chile's magnificent Lakes area. It was founded on the foundations of existing institutions that grew out of the University of Chile and the Technical University of Chile. Higher education had been available in Osorno since 1964, through the Professional Institute, which arose from the dissolution of the Technical University in 1981, along with other options in Puerto Montt.


    Its function as a regional institution is emphasized by its purpose to produce "professionals and technicians with solid knowledge, pluralistic, and committed to their environment." The Lagos region is home to more than 80% of the pupils. The University of Los Lagos is one of 16 Chilean Sustainable Campus Network members dedicated to both relevant research and sustainable operations.


    Aquaculture is one of 14 academic divisions, including fish farming outposts in Quinchao and Rio Sur, as well as a 300-hectare forest in Barrio del Rio Bueno, reflecting the local economy. iMar, which was founded in 2002 and focuses on the environment and resource challenges of coastal regions, is one of the more established research centers. A chair in cooperation and a diploma in business management geared at cooperative managers were recently formed in collaboration with nine cooperative firms in the region.

  5. The University of Chile is a Chilean public university located in Santiago. It was established in 1842 and opened in 1843. It is the country's oldest and most prestigious university. It arose from the ashes of the ancient colonial Royal University of San Felipe, and it has a long history of academic, scientific, and social outreach. The university aims to address national and regional concerns as well as contribute to Chile's development. It is regarded as one of Latin America's best universities for its leadership and creativity in science, technology, social sciences, and the arts, as evidenced by its creation, extension, teaching, and research roles.

  6. The University of Santiago, Chile (Usach) is one of the country's oldest public universities. Under the administration of Manuel Bulnes, the school was founded in 1849 as the School of Arts and Crafts. Students' ages ranged from 15 to 18 at the time, making it a secondary school unit. Students were expected to be able to read and write, as well as do basic mathematical calculations. Students studied algebra, descriptive geometry, trigonometry, technical drawing, industrial mechanics, physics, and chemistry, as well as Spanish, history, and geography, in addition to intensive workshop training.

  7. The Federico Santa María Technical Institution (UTFSM) is a Chilean university in Valparaso, Chile, that was founded in 1926. The institution has campuses in Valparais and Ecuador, as well as an international campus. Several important businesspeople, engineers, and Chilean scientists attended Federico Santa Mara Technical University. Sansanos are the students and alumni of the school.


    In 1962, the UTFSM became the first university in Chile to award a doctorate in engineering, as well as the first higher-education institution in Latin America to do so. The UTFSM university radio station is Latin America's oldest campus radio station.

  8. The Austral Institution of Chile (UACh) is a research university in Chile with a main campus in Valdivia and a satellite campus in Puerto Montt. It is one of the eight original Chilean Traditional Universities, having been founded on September 7, 1954. It is a private law nonprofit self-owned corporation that receives major public assistance.

  9. Talca University is a Chilean institution with campuses in Talca, Curicó, Linares, Santa Cruz, and Santiago. Talca University was established in 1981. Talca is home to the company's headquarters and main campus. It is a member of the Chilean Traditional Universities, the Chilean State Universities Consortium, and the Chilean Regional Universities Group.

  10. The University of La Frontera (UFRO) is one of Latin America's best universities, with a plethora of teaching and research competence in various disciplines of study.
