Pontifical Catholic University of Chile
The Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (PUC or UC) is one of six Catholic universities in Chile's university system, and one of the country's two pontifical universities. It is one of Chile's oldest universities, as well as one of Latin America's most well-known educational institutions, having been founded in 1888.
The competition between the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and the University of Chile is deep and long-standing, as the former is often regarded as the country's most traditional and distinguished institution, while the latter is secular. This rivalry extends to sports, particularly football.
According to the Shanghai ranking, UC is among the top 10 Latin American universities. UC is ranked first in two subject categories: Economics and Management (about 101–150), Information Technology (approximately 101–150) and Mathematics (around 151-200).
PUC is a multi-campus, private, metropolitan university. It is one of eleven Catholic universities in Chile, as well as one of the twenty-five universities that make up the Rectors' Council, Chile's state-sponsored university system. Although it is not state-owned, it is one of the Universities of the Rectors' Council of Chilean Universities, and a significant portion of its budget is provided by state transfers under various programs.
