Gadjah Mada University
Gadjah Mada University (UGM), another of Indonesia's most famous institutions, is placed joint 254th in the QS World University Rankings and joint 57th in Asia. It was founded in 1949 and is the country's largest university, with around 50,000 students enrolled in 18 faculties, including 1,187 international students. Its 360-acre main campus is located in Yogyakarta, one of the country's smaller towns, contributing to the city's reputation as a hub of education. UGM has recently implemented a "educopolis area," which fosters learning by fostering diverse cooperation and reacting to critical environmental challenges.
Uversitas Gadjah Mada sprang from the Indonesian nation's revolutionary battle for independence. The UGM, which was established at the start of the country's independence, has been designated as a scientific and cultural center of higher education.
This university, known as "Universitas Gadjah Mada," is the result of the merger of many previously established higher education institutions. Despite the fact that the institutions began on December 16, 1949, as stipulated in government rules, the UGM's anniversary date was changed to December 19 owing to historical events in Indonesia that occurred on that day.
Furthermore, the name Gadjah Mada has a particular connotation that includes the spirit and excellent example of Majapahit Empire Prime Minister Gadjah Mada, who was able to unify the Nusantara archipelago. This has essentially been understood in the construction of the UGM's identity as a national university, the spirit of the Republic of Indonesia's existence, the University of Pancasila, the Popular University, and the University Center of Culture.
The UGM initially comprised six faculties: the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy, the Faculty of Agriculture, and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. As a result, the first conferences were held at the Sitihinggil and Pagelaran complexes, as well as in the rooms and amenities of Yogyakarta's Kraton Palace. The UGM now contains 18 faculties, a PhD program, a vocational program, and hundreds more study programs.
