Gishora
Gishora, 7 kilometers from Gitega, stands majestically on a hill chosen by King Gisabo for its strategic location. The drum sanctuary is the primary attraction of Gishora and a popular stop for safari expeditions.
Throughout Burundi's history, drums have played an essential role, and they were frequently constructed for and performed at key events such as royal festivities. When the drums are played, it is said that the ancestors are invited into the rite and that evil spirits are banished.
The sanctuary is an excellent place to learn about Burundi culture while also seeing the architecture of a royal palace that has been reconstructed.
