Highland Brewing Company
Highland Brewing Company is the largest family-owned, independent brewery in the Southeast. With a portfolio of beers that celebrate tradition and spark new paths, the company prides itself on being Asheville's craft pioneer and Southern beer leader.
Highland was founded in 1994 by retired engineer, Oscar Wong. This is the first legal brewery in Asheville since it was banned. Brewing has begun downtown in a rented basement space under Barley's Taproom. Built almost entirely of retrofitted dairy equipment, their original brewery produced 6,500 cases of beer per year in a 12,000 square foot basement. They aged in that basement for 13 years as beers like Gaelic Ale, Black Mocha Stout and Oatmeal Porter evolved into some of the area's favorites.
Today, Highland is led by Oscar's daughter, Leah Wong Ashburn, and the brewery has grown into a leading regional player with distribution across 5 states in the Southeast including North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. Gaelic Ale, an American Amber Ale, has remained the top and best-selling brand for the past 25 years. Since then, many award-winning beers such as the AVL IPA and Highland Pilsner have been added to their beer portfolio.
