Ilhabela
Ilhabela, Brazil's largest island and literally a "beautiful island," offers visitors nearly 40 kilometers of pristine beaches as well as a tropical island's worth of hiking trails, waterfalls, and even a nascent party scene. Ilhabela, located 207 kilometers from So Paulo, can get crowded, so try to visit during the work week. Over 80% of Ilhabela is protected state park (good news for nature lovers!). Because the coast faces the So Sebastio channel, the seas are calm and the coves are easily accessible.
Praia do Curral dazzles with its impressively blue-green waters, and Jabaquara Beach, located on the island's northern tip, rivals it with silky sand surrounded by virgin forests. Must-see attractions include Bonete, which can be reached by boat or via a memorable 4-hour jungle trail, and Baa de Castelhanos, which is best explored with four-wheel drive vehicles. Both locations lead to stunning waterfalls. Other beautiful beaches and natural areas include Praia do Julio, Ilha das Cabras, and Saco do Eustáquio (only accessible by boat).
