Bluehole established Krafton on November 5, 2018, as a holding company for its video game properties following the success of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, which resulted in investment from Tencent Holdings as well as the development and acquisition of studios. The name "Krafton" was chosen in homage to medieval trade group designations. To lead Krafton, Kim Chang-han was brought in from his position as CEO of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds developer PUBG Corporation (now PUBG Studios).
