Le Gavroche
Le Gavroche serves unapologetic old-school fine dining, complete with two Michelin stars. The art on the walls is equally impressive and has only grown stronger as a result of current chef-manager Michel Roux Jr.'s good taste. Allow your eyes to wander the room as you work your way through the eight-course tasting menu, looking for works by Picasso, Miró, and Dal. There are also a few original pieces that tell stories about the history of this London landmark. It was founded in 1967 in Chelsea by the Roux brothers, Albert and Michel, and is now run by Michel Roux Jr, who took over in 1991. Le Gavroche remains the go-to haute cuisine restaurant for a dignified, extremely wealthy clientele. While it may bear the name of the street urchin from Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables, there’s nothing scruffy about the club-like decor.
The eight-course menu exceptional begins with soufflé suissesse, an exquisitely light and fluffy gruyère soufflé cooked on double cream: a recipe from the original restaurant. The sourness of an aigre-doux vinaigrette overpowered a salad of braised octopus and soft-shell crab, but a boudin noir served with a runny scotch egg and wicked piece of pork crackling quickly restored happiness. Roast squab arrives perfectly rare, accompanied by braised peas and hauntingly intense jus. A raspberry and gianduja millefeuille round out the dessert. The food is complemented by an imperious wine list, which includes 50 wines by the glass. The service is gracious, and it will allow you to appreciate the prosperous buzz of the place even more.
