Manila Cathedral: Intricate Woodwork

For over 400 years, the Manila Cathedral has withstood earthquakes and conquests! The Basilica was built in 1571, but it has since evolved, and the current structure is the eighth! The cathedral is a stellar example of Neo-Romanesque architecture that is admired by architecture buffs from all over the world and is one of the top ten attractions in Manila. The cathedral's main attractions are the massive pipe organ and the high-vaulted ceiling with intricate woodwork. It is one of the best places to visit in Manila.

The Manila Cathedral's
main façade is adorned with statues of famous saints carved in Roman travertine stone. St. Catherine Labourne, St. Lawrence of Brindisi, St. Pius V, and St. Leo IX are represented by pillars that support the main altar. The main altar's tabernacle depicts Mary receiving Jesus' body from the hands of St. John, and the altar communion rail is made of fine rosette orange, cream, and white marble.

The Episcopal Throne, to the left of the main altar, is the seat of the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Manila. It's made of the finest Carrara marble from Italy. The crypt, which is located beneath the main altar, houses the mortal remains of previous archbishops of Manila.

There are 134 stained-glass windows throughout the building. The central door is also noteworthy, with important events in Manila Cathedral's history artistically reflected on it. The Neo-Romanesque artistic style of the church makes it a popular venue for weddings and other Catholic celebrations. It also draws tourists, who can purchase religious souvenirs from the ground belfry.
