Marstrand
Far to the west, at the edge of the archipelago, where the sea has invaded, is where you'll find Marstrand. Known for its sailing and swimming, Marstrand is a popular spot for travelers. Enjoy a sense of power at Fort Carlstens, the harbor full of boats and picturesque neighborhoods with pedestrian paths. There are many chic restaurants and cafes in the area and opportunities for sunbathing and swimming in the sea.
Marstrand's biggest attraction is the imposing Carlstens Fort, which dates back to the mid-17th century. Here the notorious thief Lasse-Maja was imprisoned for 27 years, and if you visit the fort's dungeons, you will understand why 5 out of 5 prisoners die during these winters. Marstrand also offers spas and entertainment, vibrant nightlife, and many sea-related adventures.
There are some great walking options in the area. You can stop for a swim at the nudist beach while walking around all of Marstrandsön or take a shorter walk through Smugglelarrännan. Take a break by the Skallens lighthouse and admire the ravishing area where Skagerrak and Kattegatt meet. On Koön, there are well-marked footpaths, with three difficulty levels and plenty of rest areas and lovely viewpoints.
