Mini Metro
Dinosaur Polo Club, a New Zealand indie development team, created Mini Metro, a puzzle strategy video game. Players must build an effective rail transit network for a rapidly developing metropolis. Stations are represented by variously shaped nodes, and players can link them by creating lines. The levels are based on real cities, and the look of stations and people is produced procedurally. The game's graphic style mimics the appearance of current transportation maps by using vivid colors and minimal geometry. A generative audio system is used in the game to produce noises depending on the player's activities and the transit network. The rhythms and noises were inspired by works of minimal music.
Mini Metro was created in April 2013 for a video game creation competition, and a prototype version was made available for free on web browsers. The creators applied a series of limits during the game's conceptualization phase to limit its scope and ensure the project could be completed. Following the event, the game's development proceeded, and an in-development version was launched commercially for Linux, OS X, and Windows in August 2014. Mini Metro was released in full on PC in November 2015, Android and iOS in October 2016, and Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 versions in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
