Monster is a Naoki Urasawa manga series written and illustrated. Between December 1994 and December 2001, Shogakukan published it in their seinen manga magazine Big Comic Original, with its chapters collected in 18 tankbon volumes. The plot revolves around Kenzo Tenma, a Japanese surgeon living in Düsseldorf, Germany, whose life is turned upside down after he becomes involved with one of his former patients, Johan Liebert, who is revealed to be a dangerous serial killer.
Kenzou Tenma, a renowned Japanese neurosurgeon working in postwar Germany, must choose between operating on Johan Liebert, a dying orphan, and the mayor of Düsseldorf. Finally, Tenma jeopardizes his reputation by saving Johan, effectively killing the mayor. The director of the Heinemann Hospital dismisses Tenma from his post, and Heinemann's daughter, Eva, breaks off their engagement.
Tenma has given up hope for a successful career until the mysterious murder of Heinemann provides him with a second chance. Tenma is now the head of the surgical department and on his way to becoming the director. Everything appears to be fine at first, but he soon becomes entangled in a series of heinous murders that take place across Germany.
